The Alumni association of the University of Lagos has reiterated its continued readiness towards sustaining the virtues of excellence which a former vice chancellor of the University; Late Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe stood for all through his earthly sojourn.
While addressing a press conference on Tuesday (2 nd of May) to herald the programme of activities marking the 5 th Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe memorial lecture series, the chairman.
UNILAG Alumni association, Lagos branch, Dr. Lukman Adeoti said selected 20 indigent students of the University will smile home with a sum of One hundred and fifty thousand naira scholarship each all in the spirit of benevolence which late Prof Sofoluwe’s life style epitomised.
The press conference which held in the Afe Babalola Auditorium of the University of Lagos saw the chairman, Lagos branch of the UNILAG alumni association paying glowing tributes to the late Prof Sofoluwe as an erudite scholar and an embodiment of simplicity who demystified the office of the Vice chancellor during his tenure before passing on on the 12 th of May, 2012.
Dr. Adeoti who was flanked by other members of his executive team said come Thursday 11 th of May, all roads would lead to the UNILAG sports centre for a novelty match while the J. F. Ade Ajayi auditorium of the University of Lagos will be intellectually agog on Friday,12 th of May as the 5th memorial lecture titled; “The Administration and Management of a University in a recess economy, a case study of the University of Lagos” will be delivered by the Vice Chancellor, Sokoto state University,Prof. Nuhu Yakub (OFR).
The Managing Director, Mobil Oil Nigeria PLC, Mr. Tunji Oyebanji will be the chairman of the day while the Speaker, Lagos State house of assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa is slated to be the Special guest of honour.
The fifth Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe memorial lecture according to the Chairman, Organising committee; Prof. Oluwayemisi Obasan will feature the public presentation of a compendium of various abstracts (especially the debut and the last) alongside several other intellectual works of the deceased.
She also informed the gathering that an exhibition is also slated to take place at the J. F. Ade Ajayi auditorium during which special collections of the late Prof. Sofoluwe and some items regarded as treasures between him and his family, his library and the intellectual community will be showcased just as outreaches would be made to selected orphanages and motherless babies homes all as part of efforts to celebrate the sterling qualities of leadership, academic excellence, administrative astuteness and dedication to humanity being some of the virtues which stood the late Prof Sofoluwe out among his peers.
Prof.Obasan also disclosed that special religious services will hold in honour of the late Prof Sofoluwe to further commit his family into God’s hands and for the continued preservation of his many sterling legacies.
There were remarks from other dignitaries at the press conference who all showered encomiums on the deceased describing him as a man of sterling virtues whose life and times preached simplicity of life, dexterity of purpose and compassion for mankind.
Prof Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe was born on the 5 th of April, 1950; he began his career in 1976 as a Graduate Assistant in the University of Lagos where he later became a full Professor of Computer science in October 1996. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Science for two consecutive terms. He had also served as the Director of Academics Planning Unit of the University before his appointment as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Management Services, He was appointed vice chancellor on 31st January 2010, to succeed professor Tolu Odugbemi.
Professor Sofoluwe holds a place in history as the third Alumnus of the University of Lagos to become Vice Chancellor of the Institution after Prof Ibidapo Obe and his immediate predecessor, Prof Tolu Odugbemi.
He has authored and co-authored numerous academic books and articles in several reputable local and international journals before his death on the 12 th of May, 2012.
