The University of Lagos today led the comity of ivory towers across Nigeria in celebrating the
Executive Secretary, National Universities’ Commission (N.U.C.); Professor Adamu Abubakar
Rasheed as he got inducted into the College of Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Letters.
The NUC boss and his team were hosted to a civic reception courtesy of the University after the
Induction ceremony which held at the J. F. Ade Ajayi auditorium of the institution in Lagos.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahamon Bello alongside principal officers of the university were all
on ground to identify with the NUC Executive secretary as he bagged the Fellowship award of the
Nigerian Academy of Letters, one which Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, on behalf of all other recipients,
rated the highest of its type in the humanities.
Also present to cheer the fun of the day with the NUC boss were the Deputy Governor of Kano State; Professor Hafiz Abubakar, the Vice Chancellors of the Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Yahuza Bello, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile –ife, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede University of Ilorin, Prof.
Abdulganiy Ambali and the President, Nigerian Academy of Letters, Prof. Ben Elugbe among others.
Prof Rahamon Bello specially congratulated Prof. Abubakar Rasheed on the occasion describing it as a celebration of the astuteness which he has brought into steering the affairs of Ivory towers in
While charging the NUC boss not to rest on his oars, Prof. Bello implored him to see his induction as a fellow of the College of The Nigerian Academy of Letters as a new challenge to do more in
improving the lot of University education in Nigeria.
In his response, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed was full of gratitude to the management of the University of Lagos for the honour done him.
He described the reception held in his honour as one which lends credence to the place of the
University of Lagos as a leading institution in terms of respect for the promotion and preservation of values.
Prof. Abubakar Rasheed had in his acceptance speech, which he delivered on behalf of other
recipients, assured of his ideal of partnering with the Academy of letters in attaining excellence and
high standards in the Nation’s education.
He also pledged openness to guidance and cooperation from the Nigerian Academy of Letters in the
NUC’s task of raising the standards of University education in Nigeria to meet contemporary trends
The brief ceremony which held at the Parapet of the J.F. Ade Ajayi auditorium saw the Vice Chancellor, Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Yahuza Bello presenting a plaque to the NUC Executive secretary as a mark of honour while representatives of other Universities in attendance also presented gifts and letters all in the spirit of identifying with Prof. Abubakar Rasheed as he became a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters.
