It was celebration galore as the University of Lagos vice chancellor, Prof. Rahamon A. Bello officially bowed out as the 11th Vice Chancellor of the univerity.
During the ‘Home Coming and Dinner’ programme organised in honour of the Vice Chancellor, members of the University community gathered at the Senate Chamber as he handed over the university documents and the mantle of leadership, with high sense of relief to the new vice chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.
During the handing over, the outgoing Vice Chancellor enjoined his successor to always put the University first in all his dealings and to thread in his footsteps for greater achievements.
In a citation exercise, Director of Quality Assurance, Professor L.O Chukwu reeled out some of the outgoing vice chancellor’s achievements in office including: an upgrade of El Kanemi male hostel into a master edifice with all rooms ensuite, remodelling of Sodeinde and Morounfolu Halls of Residence, construction of Julius Berger lecture Hall at the faculty of engineering, Scholars Hostel, Tayo Aderinokun Lecture Theatre at the faculty of Business Administration, as well as construction of the Academic Publishing Centre, Public Procurement Centre, and the ongoing nine storey University Library.
Professor Chukwu further stated that under Professor Bello as vice chancellor, the University of Lagos was awarded Best Tertiary institution on e-Governance by the NITDA, University with the Best Use of Technology by the Nigeria Technology Award and the University Website/Portal of the year 2016 (by the Nigeria Technology Awards. He therefore concluded by descrbing the outgoing vice chancellor as a silent achiever.
Receiving the vice chancellor after the formal pulling out from the Senate Building in a motorcade at the faculty of Engineering, Professor Funsho Falade recieved Prof Bello, as the Dean of Faculty, and led him to the faculty of Engineering complex for the homecoming ceremonies.
In an opening remark, Professor Falade described the outgoing vice chancellor as a humble leader who made the faculty of engineering proud in the university and Nigeria at large through his giant achievements.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Lagos Branch, Engr. Johnson A. Akinwande praised the outgoing vice chancellor for his successful tenure. He said the NSE, was very proud of the giant strides Professor Bello had attained not only as vice chancellor of University of Lagos but also as an accomplished first class engineer.
In his remark, the governor of Ogun state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun described the outgoing vice chancellor, as an illustrious son, who has put the name of the state in high places through his various achievements.
The governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa commended the entire management and staff of University of Lagos for the smooth transition. He urged the in-coming vice chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe to thread the footsteps of his predecessor as both of them were from Ogun state.
Elated, the outgoing vice chancellor thanked his successor, the Dean faculty of Engineering,former president, Nigerian Academy of Engineering, Professor Francis Ayodele Ogunye, the entire management and staff of the university and well wishers for their support throughout his stay in office.
He promised to return to classroom after his sabbatical leave.
