Valentine’s Day, the popular lover’s day which is gotten from Saint Valentine’s Day is an
annual holiday celebrated on February 14, “It originated as a Western Christian liturgical
feast honoring one or more early saints starting with Valentinus and continued with several
martyrdom stories that were connected to February 14.”
It is recognized as a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration in many
regions around the world, although not generally declared as a public holiday in any country,
many use the opportunity to woo ladies they fancy-take conscious efforts to express their
feelings to the opposite sex and appreciate loved ones, family and friends.
According to legend, the popular and most recent of the Valentines- performed weddings for
soldiers who were forbidden to marry, cared for and ministered to Christians, who were
persecuted under the Roman Empire. He was arrested and imprisoned. While in prison, he
healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius, and the duo fell in love. Before his execution, as a
farewell he wrote Asterius a letter signed "Your Valentine"
When talking about Valentine’s Day, people always tend to recall poems on love, animals
like love birds that depict love, hearts, and heartfelt emotions, and so many other symbolic
representation of love are common gifts given to loved ones. This year is it seems Nigeria
lagged behind in the annual love fiesta. Many Nigerians said they spent the day like any other
of the 364 days in the Gregorian calendar.
“I am tired of receiving just a rose and card or even a phone call” says Tade, a student of
University of Lagos when asked how she spent her valentine.
Some people said they wanted to do more for their “vals” but had to restrict themselves to
what they could afford as the economy of the country is a major contributing factor to how
much “Love” they could show their spouse.
“If I had the money, I could shop the world for her, but seeing where the country has put us
now, I am only going to give my wife what I can afford, and I am sure she will understand”
Seyi who is an Entrepreneur said.
Most post on social media showed kind words dedicated to family and friends, couples
celebrating each other and just a few had pictures of gifts given to them uploaded..
However the valentine was celebrated; Robert Frost said let’s remember that “Love is an
irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.”
