Governors of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina and Niger the northern states today and held an emergency meeting with the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole over the outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis in the area.
In attendance at the meeting which held in Kaduna were also traditional and religious leaders of the area.
Reports revealed that Governors Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina state as well as Abubakar Bello of Niger state allconverged under the host of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state
The minister for Health; Professor Isaac Adewole led key officials from the federal ministry of health to the meeting.
Traditional rulers from the affected states are also present at the meeting which fillers reveal will focus of deliberating and agreeing on a workable policy to curb the spread of the cerebrospinal meningitis and returning normalcy to the affected states.
Cerebrospinal meningitis, CSM, has spread across 19 states in the country, with 3,959 suspected cases reported and 438 deaths recorded as at April 5.
The Northern states have been worst hit by the epidemic as Zamfara, Katsina and Sokoto, account for 93 percent of the cases reported.
Zamfara State is hardest hit with 1,846 suspected cases and 216 deaths.
The Federal Government, last Thursday, kicked off a mass vaccination exercise in the eight most affected local government areas in the state.
