The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says its earlier decision to zone its next presidential candidacy to the northern part of the country still stands.
The party reiterated the stance in response to the governor of Ekiti State; Mr. Ayodele Fayose who has sent a letter notifying some leaders of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) of his decision to vie for the Presidency on the party’s platform.
In an interview with Newsmen on the matter, the National publicity secretary of the PDP; Prince Dayo Adeyeye particularly implored the Ekiti state helmsman not to waste his resources on his presidential ambition, saying the party’s candidate for the 2019 election will come from the North.
The party said all its members were aware of the zoning formula it adopted for both its presidential ticket and the position of the national chairman.
Gov. Ayo Fayose’s letter according to news sources was signed by the governor himself under the auspices of Ayo Fayose Presidential Campaign Organisation.
Reacting to Gov. Fayose’s letter through which he described his ambition as being in the party’s interest, the National Publicity secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye implored the governor to respect the zoning arrangement as laid down by the party at its convention.
Prince Adeyeye wondered why Gov. Fayose would want to contravene the party’s position in spite of being a leader in the party and being in attendance at the National convention where the decision was taken.
Prince Adeyeye told journaliststhat the National convention being the highest decision making organ of the party had zoned the presidential ticket of the PDP to the north while the position of the Party’s national chairman was zoned to the south
It was also gathered that Gov. Fayose is leaving no stone unturned as he was reported to have visited the chairman of the PDP Board of trustees, Alhaji Walid Jibrin at his residence in the federal capital territory where he solicited his support for his ambition.
Sources close to the event however disclosed that the Alhaji Jibrin reminded Gov Ayo Fayose of the party’s zoning arrangement while Gov Fayose was said to have insisted that he was also constitutionally qualified to get into the race.
