That the University of Lagos is still maintaining the exalted tradition of intellectual and political struggle is proof of the quality of scholarly pedagogical and administrative leadership of the immediate past Vice chancellor professor Rahamon Adisa Bello.

This was the submission of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria (UNN), Professor Benjamin Ozumba in a valedictory Lecture delivered at Afe Babalola Auditorium, University of Lagos, in honour of the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the institution Professor Rahamon Bello.

Speaking on the topic ‘Transformative Leadership in an evolving Democracy’, Professor Ozumba affirmed that there was no greater achievement by former Vice- Chancellor, than the relative peace experienced throughout his five years in office.

 ‘‘In the last five years, the University of Lagos was always in the news about all manner of issues especially concerning relations between the unions and the administration. However, all these cases as we would easily recall, were eventually resolved amicably’’.

Professor Ozumba reeled out other achievements of the outgone VC, including, infrastructure development, vast improvements in the “webometric” ranking of the university, staff promotions, employment and general welfare.

 According to him, Professor Bello has shown deep emotional and practical commitment to making the university a foremost institution He challenged the incumbent Vice Chancellor of the institution Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe to sustain and surpass the limits already attained and standards set.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe said the event was organised to celebrate the out -gone VC who has worked assiduously over the past five years. He expressed optimism that his posterity will be affected positively.

 In his own remarks, the Chairman of the event, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, said professor Bello’s leadership in the past five years has led to unprecedented development of the university in terms of quality output in all spheres of the university. He congratulated Prof Bello on the successful completion of his tenure.

Highpoint of the event was reminiscences on the out-gone VC from Professors Bola Oboh and Folashade Ogunsola as they took turns to eulogize him. Former DVC, Management Services, Professor Babajide Alo described Professor Bello as a man of impeccable character and great intellect who paid unusual attention to details.

Also, Distinguished Professor Francis Ogunye, noted that Professor Bello was a dependable person, and a man of integrity. He advised the vice chancellor Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe to emulate the virtues of his predecessor in moving the university forward.


Responding, a clearly elated Professor Bello, said the success story of the University of Lagos is a combination of everyone playing his role. He appreciated the management for organising the event in his honour urging them to continue to portray UNILAG in a good light to the outside world.
