As the 49 th Convocation Ceremonies of the University of Lagos continues, all roads led to the
J.F. Ade Ajayi Main Auditorium where activities for the awards of degrees and diplomas to
graduating students of the Faculties of Education and Social Sciences (Wednesday morning
session), and those of the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Sciences, and Sciences
(Afternoon session) took place.
This year’s ceremonies, which, would also see other members of the academic community,
who have distinguished themselves in different areas of the academia, and have been selected
by the University Council, conferred with titles and honours.
It is the first time in awhile that the ceremonies have been moved away from the Jelili
Omotola Multipurpose Hall, to the University’s Main Auditorium.
This was announced earlier in the week by the University’s Vice- Chancellor, Prof.
Oluwatoyin Ogundipe while delivering an address at the 2016/17 Pre-Convocation Press
Conference Address which took place on May 2, at the University’s Senate Chamber, Senate
The Vice- Chancellor explained it was part of a move to restructure and bring changes to the
way the ceremonies had held in recent past.
In addition, the sequence of activities have also been altered to fall in line with growing
trends; and this has ensured the University Exhibition Programme was held a day before
actual ceremonies began.
A source from the university senate revealed that in the preceding years, the exhibitions ran
almost concurrently with other convocation programmes, and so, was often downplayed.
“That, was the reason why the School Authority, decided to fix the exhibition for a day
earlier,” he explained, “And with Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, declaring
the event open- shortly before he delivered the Convocation Lecture at the Main Auditorium-
members of the university community, as well as the public were availed the opportunity to
see the various exhibitions such as inventions and novel ideas/ discoveries crystallized by
academics and researchers in the last one year.”
It was announced last week during the press conference that, a total of 12,637 students would
be graduating during this year’s convocation exercise; with a total of 6,815 undergraduates
and 5, 822 at the post graduate level.
With the convocation sequence altered into morning and afternoon sessions-beginning from
9 th May- the morning session involved graduates from the Faculties of Education, and Social
Sciences with 890, and 662 graduating students respectively.
In the same vein, graduates from the Faculties of Arts, Environmental Sciences, and Sciences
numbering 567; 315; and 886 respectively were conferred with degrees during the afternoon
The day’s event climaxed with the yearly Edutainment convocation fiesta organised by the
University’s Alumni Association which featured notable music artistes, comedians and had in
attendance principal members of the university governing board led by the Pro- Chancellor,
Dr Wale Babalakin, SAN; Vice- Chancellor, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, President of the
University of Lagos Alumni World Wide, Olorogun Sunny Kuku, and others.
