WE ARE KEEN ON BEST QUALITY ASSURANCE PRACTICE – UNILAG VC

The Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe says efforts are in
top gear to roll out an Electronic Mobile Identity Access Technology across all faculties of
the University.
The technology which is currently being test run at the University’s faculty of Law,
according to the Vice Chancellor, is part of efforts to entrench a globally compliant Internal
Quality Assurance System in the university.
Prof. Ogundipe says the Electronic Mobile Identity Access Technology new is meant for
students’ attendance and has a capacity for 3,000 thumbprints and 5,000 smartcards.
He made this known at the formal inaugural ceremony of the University’s Quality Assurance
Committee which held at the institution’s Senate Chamber.
Prof. Ogundipe noted that the inauguration of the Quality Assurance Committee is borne out
of the desire to maintain and improve quality and standards of scholarship, teaching and
learning experiences as well as service to the University’s entire community.
While commending the successive leadership of the Quality Assurance and Servicom Unit of
UNILAG since its inception 6 years ago, Prof. Ogundipe affirmed that the feedbacks from
series of monitoring and evaluation exercises carried out by the Unit have led to major
innovations, policies as well as training programmes all aimed at enhancing the internal
quality assurance standards.
The Vice Chancellor who reaffirmed of the University’s keen interest in good initiatives
noted that emphasis would always be on quality service delivery and continued improvement
of programmes in a transparent system through robust internal quality assurance system.
The incumbent director, Quality Assurance and Servicom Unit, Professor Lucious Obinna
Chukwu in his welcoming remarks, noted that the 27 member Quality Assurance Committee
being inaugurated is to assist the Vice chancellor in ensuring that benchmarks and standards
set for quality service delivery are achieved and sustained.

The don who gave an overview of Quality Assurance and Servicom within and beyond
UNILAG noted that the goal is to make the University rank among the first 100 Ivory towers
in the world in the next five years.
Prof. Chukwu reeled out the terms of reference for the committee to include; mainstreaming
quality management, publishing quality assurance activities for staff and students, organising
and coordinating self evaluation exercises and monitoring global trends in Quality Assurance
management as well as incorporating such into their various units and faculties.
Responding on behalf of members of the 27 member committee who were selected across all
units and faculties of the University, the Dean, Students’ Affairs, Professor Ademola Adeleke
appreciated the entire leadership of the University and assured of their readiness to go all out
in ensuring that the set goals, aims and objectives of setting up the committee are achieved.
The Quality Assurance and Servicom Unit was established in the University of Lagos on the
12 th of May, 2012 and was nested in the office of the Vice Chancellor.
Its objectives are to maintain and improve standards of scholarship, teaching and learning
experiences, research and services to the entire University community as well as to promote
the core values and activities of the University of Lagos as it strives to rank among the first
100 Universities in the world.
