The “2019 UNESCO S.T.E.M Camp for Gifted Girls” was organized to equip the Girl Child with the necessary skills In Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Representing the Federal Ministry of Education at the closing ceremony of the camp, Mrs. Olubisi Olagbenro commended the initiative, saying that the training was in line with the Sustainable Development Goals 4 And 5 of Inclusive Education and Gender Equality respectively.
In demonstration of knowledge acquired during the course of the training, the girls processed mathematical calculations with smaller models of The Abacus Machine at the speed of Scientific Calculators.
They also went ahead to perform calculations off their heads almost at the speed of the calculator.
Impressed by the performances of the girls, Vice Chancellor of The University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe promised every participant admission into the University to study any course of choice.
The “2019 UNESCO S.T.E.M Camp for Gifted Girls” was coordinated by Professor Adewale Solarin of the Faculty of Education, University Of Lagos and had girls in the Primary And Secondary School categories drawn from all over the country in participation.
Also, as part of the camp, some primary and secondary school teachers were trained in the delivery of S.T.E.M education as UNESCO aims to reinforce the implementation of S.T.E.M Education in West Africa.
